Debora uses a three dimensional natural canvas commonly called Artist Conk or Shelf Mushroom. It is a naturally occurring fungus. It grows on tree trunks or on the sides of stumps and fallen logs. Its shape is wide and flat and it may grow over a foot and a half in width.
The artist conk is perfect as a natural canvas because of its hard exterior and flat painting surface. Each conk varies in size, shape and character making these artistic treasures truly unique. To preserve the artist conk it is air dried naturally for several months or more. Then each conk is heat treated and primed with Gesso. Once the painting is finished, the back is sealed several times with shellac and the front is sealed with an acrylic matte varnish.
Using large gallery wrapped canvases Debora builds the surface of the canvas from the bottom up. By using a three dimensional sculpting medium she is able to sculpt portions of the foreground such as trees, rock ledges, and some animals. In this way she is able to add a three dimensional quality to her paintings and give viewers the feeling that what they see before them may just jump right off the canvas.
